From Exile's keys/guitar/vox/tech guru John Douglass will be showing off his live rig he uses for keys, samples, and lights on June 29th at SAE Atlanta. I just spoke to John this afternoon, and he's bringing his live setup out to the meeting, including lights (minus the Marshall stacks)!
From Exile caught my attention at a live show in January, I saw their band set up on stage and the laptop was running Ableton Live! What I wasn't prepared for was the heavy triple-guitar sonic onslaught that ensued. What as most interesting to me though, behind the guitars and the metal were intricate melodies, and vocal effect and keyboard sounds that seemed to morph with the music. Again I saw them in May (actually I opened for them) and this time around, they used Live to control LED lights that synced with the music. Simple and effective.
We decided to invite John to come show how From Exile uses Live in a more "band" setting, and how these simple tricks to control and effect live instruments and voice and trigger lights via MIDI can all be done from Ableton.
From Exile recently released a Nine Inch Nails cover EP for free: http://fromexile.com/nin and it's really awesome.
Check it out for free right here:
So we'll see you in June and come on out and learn about Live Effect Automation, and MIDI Hardware Control from Live!

Members are encouraged to bring live sets in via USB keys or cd-rs to show to the group. Remember to render down any external instruments/plugins, the only ones we can guarantee will work are the built-in "Suite" instruments.
Also, SAE is a Toys-for-Tots drop off, so in light of the holiday season, bring something for the kids!

October User Group with Respire - Roundup and next meeting announcement
Last week, local ATL Live user Paul Noonan aka Respire came in to show his DJ set up at the group.
As you can see on the left, Paul uses two Trigger Fingers, an APC 20 (just added), and a Native Instruments Kontrol 1 interface.
The Respire setup seems complex at first, but it's actually rather simple and symmetrical:
There are 4 decks on the left each with the same FX rack on each channel and color coded, a buffer track, 3 crate tracks (with clips also color coded to their Mixed in Key key code), and finally a custom "visual metronome" track that blinks lights on the APC to show which bar, beat, and measure you are in the mix - genius!
Here's the Live Pack: Respire Live Pack
You can find Mixed in Key at mixedinkey.com and the Put This Into That iTunes Script Paul used to copy the Mixed in Key's codes from "Comments" to "Groupings" Here
We had quite the turnout this week (this picture was taken at 9:30, after a few had already gone home for the night):

Also, on some tangent, we stumbled across my (tricil) remix site, which is here: http://remix.tricil.net
When Paul opened "The Emancipation" at the group, I realized I didn't make the Live Pack as universally compatible as I intended. That has been fixed, see the screen shot below for details. I used the open source soundcloud-remix code as the back-end to the site. Feel free to go to the site and download a Live Pack and submit your own remix. The Live Packs will work with any fully updated installation of Live 8 and beyond.

Our next and final meeting of 2010 will be Tuesday 12/7/10 at SAE (as usual). Our speaker is TBA.
We scheduled it this way to be right between the two ending holidays to give everyone a chance to attend.
That's about it, thanks for coming and see you in December,
